2007 Honoree
ConocoPhillips and the Many Unions Represented within its Wood River Refinery
These parties were honored with the 2007 Weier Award for their steadfast commitment to fostering positive labor management relationships. More specifically, they were recognized for forming a Tripartite committee composed of owners, representatives of contracting companies and representatives of the building trades who worked together to improve safety, quality, efficiency and the cost-effectiveness of the work performed at the refinery in an effort to grow the refinery and to ensure long-term employment in safe and good-paying jobs. They also succeeded at establishing a positive labor management climate that resulted in the refinery securing a seven-year agreement with in-plant unions (which more than doubles the traditional length of time for such contracts) and for completing 2.6 million man hours without lost time due to on-the-job injuries.

1999 Honoree
Roesch, Inc., International Brotherhood of Boilermakers, Lodge S16
Boilermakers Lodge S16 and Roesch, Inc. of Belleville, Ill., received this award for their cooperative effort in improving their safety record. This company, which manufactures metal stampings and applies porcelain enamel coating to appliance parts for ranges and furnaces, experienced a series of work stoppages in the 1970s and 1980s because of conflicts over wages in an environment of double-digit inflation. And while the company experienced unprecedented revenue and employment growth during this time, it unfortunately resulted in a substantial increase in employee accidents accompanied by souring workers compensation cost.
In 1991, Roesch and the Boilermakers developed a formal labor-management agreement. The labor/management committee and its safety committee also established clearly defined goals. By working together to improve safety, the union and company made great process. This included achieving a zero record of lost work days to accidents.
